to enjoy, share and learn This website is intended as one of the principal methods of sharing our archive. This concentrates on the nineteenth and twentieth centuries; we have taken full advantage of the fact that Whittington has many long-term residents, whose families in some cases stretch back generations. So far, we have done little to establish any medieval history, but we do know that our Whittington was not included in the Domesday Book. The first mention, of which we are aware, is in a Tenure Roll, dating from about 1255, when it was held by the Bishop of Chester as part of the manor of Longdon. The Society's first printed publication was a small illustrated booklet entitled "A Walk through the History of Whittington"; it is still available and costs £3.50. In November 2009 a second booklet entitled "Whittington Then and Now" was published; it costs £5.99 and contains a selection of the best of the old photographs from the Society's archives alongside the same view in 2009.
