Farms

Since man gave up the hunter/gatherer approach to feeding himself, farming has been of foremost importance and the predominant occupation of the vast majority of the working population at least until the industrial revolution. Gradually through the twentieth century people lost their dependence on agriculture for employment as buses and cars enabled them to travel to work and agriculture lost its dependence on large workforces due to mechanisation.

Whittington's agricultural character remained largely intact until the second half of the twentieth century, only tempered somewhat by the arrival and growth of the Barracks from 1880 onwards. However, even today, the village is surrounded by agricultural land and a number of farms (albeit a much smaller number) prosper, but only a very few of the villagers earn their living from farming.
