WADAMS
WADAMS - Whittington Amateur Dramatic and Musical Society - was founded about 1952; Mrs Vivienne Dewes, who lived at Whittington Court, was the leading instigator, but actively supported by a band of keen amateur thespians. Initially productions took place in the wooden Church Hall, but moved to the Village Hall for "Poison Pen" in Nov 1966. The stage at the new hall had been built suitably large (12ft from front to back) for WADAMS productions.
From 1969 – 1982 the annual pantomime was performed every year after Christmas in the Village Hall and ran for 3 evening performances and a Saturday afternoon matinee.
Most performances were sold out for each show, which meant that the majority of the population of the Village saw it. WADAMS also presented two other main shows a year, usually a full length play and a revue or Music Hall type of event, when often food would also be served in a cabaret –style evening.
During the 1970’s, the Society entered into the Tamworth Festival of one-act plays. It won several awards over the years, both for ‘Best Play in the Festival’ and ‘Best Performer’. In one particular year, the Society represented Staffordshire in the inter-county festival at Loughborough, after having taken best play at Tamworth, where it was praised for it’s entry, but did not win an award.
Whittington History Society is grateful to Roger Dykes for loaning the majority of the programmes for scanning in order that they might be included here.
